After the declaration to continue showing “Al Tawoos" series: Was it truly re-stimulating the case of the "Fairmont incident”?
Description of the series
If you didn't hear before the story of the Ramadan series “Al Tawoos" from social media platforms, so the story simply revolves around a gang rape case from a group of wealthy young men to a girl "Omnia." Circumstances drove her to a veteran lawyer "Kamal El Ostoul" who specialized in compensation cases. He helps Omnia to restore her legal and human rights, which turns their lives upside down.
The story of the series has already been shown and repeated in previous various Egyptian dramas, for instance, the series “Public Opinion issue” starring Yusra, and the film “Alternative Plan” starring Khaled al-Nabawi, etc.
The main story revolved around a rape case and the victim who fell through a dire strait with rapists who are wealthy and influential persons. Then the struggles begin between the two sides, and the question would be: Who is victorious? Is the law if the state or the law of the jungle?
Is "Al Tawoos" a repeated tale or a re-simulation of the Fairmont hotel incident?
The Fairmont girl's case was widely spread in July 2020, when a statement was published by one of the pages concerned with women's issues, without mentioning the victim's name; she disclosed the details of the incident, which happened in 2014.
The notorious case involved a group of men accused of drugging a girl and raping her as she laid unconscious at a private party at the Fairmont Nile City hotel. Moreover, they intentionally mutilated her body and photographed the whole crime. The crime has become a case of public opinion and has received demands to arrest the accused. The legal procedures are yet continuing so far in the case.
"Al Tawoos" almost shows the exact circumstances of the Fairmont case, but with minor modifications. For example, they have changed the occupation and socio-economic class of the survivor girl. However, many social media users still see and comment that the hotel gang rape case strongly inspired the series.
Nevertheless, there are differences in the plot of the series. As a kind of play on the emotional appeals to the audience, so they will sympathize more with the characters of the series.
The series' makers didn't state that the story of the series bears any similarity to the case of Fairmont. But, while the timing of the declaration that the Supreme Council for Regulating the Egyptian Media will investigate the show’s makers for its alleged use of language offensive to family values. All of those events made the pioneers of social networking confirm their guesses!
What is unique about " ", and is it worth watching?
The series starts by focusing on a lawyer "Kamal Al-Ostool," played by Gamal Soliman, a reputable compensation lawyer who lives alone in his house in Alexandria. he searches for the cases of the proletarian class to help the poor people receive justice.
We didn't dive deep into the character's history; especially in the life of the closest person to him, his neighbor "Matilda" played by Samiha Ayoub. It can be followed by other details that will appear about the character of the lawyer, especially after the appearance of a prostitute communicating with him, and the extent of the relationship between them has not been clarified.
We didn't get many details about Omnia, played by Sahar El Sayegh; about their history. All we know is that she lives in an alley with her father and sister and sustains them.
It was clear that the series wants to shed more light on the case itself, even the rape murder that happened in the first episode. The events are going smoothly and escalating attractively.
The distinguished part that the series focuses on is the unconsciousness of the victim. Even if she was drugged and unaware, that didn't give the right to the assaulter to rape her.
We can't say that the series bears a repeated story as sexual assaults are a vital issue that we need to mention from time to time to raise awareness. Even if the story is worn away; but the important thing is that it does not harm the plot or events and makes it lose part of the dramatic suspense because this is required for any artwork.
Predicted concerns of Al Tawoos series:
Until the moment of writing the article, the series has good and somewhat interesting events. There are a lot of expected events and other unexpected events, so the balance is going well to some extent.
The first fear is that the series may fall into the trap of 30 episodes and unnecessarily prolonged events. The second fear is simply: “the cliché of the Egyptian drama.” So far, the characters are flat and monolithic, the villain does only evil actions, and the good only does everything great!
The honorable lawyer, “Kamal Al-Ostool,” who is facing a friend of his life, “Dia Shaheen,” who is also a lawyer, but is dishonest and is the father of one of those involved in the attack. A female journalist is always searching for the truth and confronting the elusive editor who does not like serious stories to be published. The youth involved in the crime, all of their actions are calculated and reckless. Omnia is the poor victim that insanely kind to the point of naivety. We have watched these kinds of characters before. But it is better not to rush into a judgment, unexpected things may happen, and we may get to know the characters more closely, and a transformation of them occurs!
But all I hope is that the end is not a "cliché" or carries a repeated message, as it is not always fair that the endings in such cases are fair!
