Omariam: Love drives you to success!
There is no specific age to start your own business, and balancing between your college and your career is not an easy challenge at all, but your love for what you do is the key to all the success you want to achieve.
Mariam the 20 years-old psychology student followed her love of art and made it a real thing and from day one she never stopped doing an effort or doing a lot of research to make something special each time.
Today we will meet Mariam and talk with her more about her Handmade brand Omariam that she combined in it the love of the handmade and her passion for her career, Let’s start.

Where did you get the idea for your business?
I love art, and painting was my childhood thing for a long time. But after a while, I found myself more into decorations and designing. This is where I got the idea of Omariam. I fell in love with handmade art and the idea that every piece is unique even if it is of the same design. I spend so much time choosing the best quality of materials and days to make one piece but I never feel tired. 

What sparked your passion for handmade work?
When I give my friends a gift, I like it to be special and close to their hearts, and also made with love. That was the spark. I decided to help others make special gifts for their loved ones.

What were the obstacles that faced you when you started your own business?

I am in the 2nd year of college in the psychology department, so balancing between work and college is very hard because every piece takes so much time to end up special.
Besides work and college, I am a founder of an initiative to support abused women, and this initiative was honored by the Ashoka Arab World organization and the Minister of Social Solidarity of Egypt for its social impact at the celebration of the Young Changemakers program.

 

What would you tell someone who wishes to pursue a career in handmade art but is hesitant? What's the most important skill they need?

The most important thing is to love it because if you love something you would do all the effort to make it, and you will tolerate the stress and the ongoing research to get your pieces right and special. Now I know a lot about carpentry, strings, glass, and mirrors, things that I'm not usually interested in, but I’m interested in making a special product that will last years in a good shape. 

 

If you want to pursue your own career just start, even if things are not perfect and you don’t have a big budget, the most important thing is to give your customers the best experience. And always have your passion.

Show us the closest piece to your heart, and tell us why it is special to you?

It is not a piece, it’s my first order back in 2019. I was in high school and it was hard to go shopping for materials because it would affect my studying time. So it is a special memory for me. It was a 365 message jar and every message had a special theme and there was a card with the messages too. This was a small gift but it is close to my heart because you can use it all year long.

How do you balance your business with your personal life?

It took me a lot of time to balance between both and I set many plans, some of them failed and some succeeded. Also, I use apps and read books to help me balance evenly. I tried and I still try.

What's the most valuable advice that you can give a woman who's planning to start her own business?

Do something that you love. Be patient, and gain experience in things related to your business, like marketing because it will help you. Even if you have good skills and talent it won’t work without knowing how to manage your business. The most important thing is to keep going even if it takes time.

What's your plan for your business?

Now I am in Alexandria and I want to be in all cities. I deliver orders to other cities but the shipping costs are high and there is no guarantee that the products will be delivered in a good shape.
